Because he saved Marc's life. Gave him a purpose. Wrapped him in armour and told him he was doing something good with his life for once. He knew straightaway that something was wrong with Marc, but he accepted him anyway. Told him he was worthy of something. Promised he could protect Marc - and he did, from everything. And yes, Marc had hated doing the dirty work. But it wasn't really that much different from taking orders from a CO. And at the end of the day, if he hadn't stumbled upon that temple, if Khonshu hadn't taken pity on him, he would have been much worse off for it. It's not as simple as Steven is making it out to be.
